On special occasions my Nanna would bring out the lace tablecloth, but for every other day of the year, there was a doily on the table in it's place. In fact, doilies were everywhere: the dining table under a centrepiece or bowl of fruit, the bedside drawers under the tissue box, and the coffee table housing the remote control.

And it wasn't just my Nanna. Throughout my childhood, it was quite simply impossible to enter a home that wasn't graced by doilies. It's a thoughtful touch that we've lost in the way we decorate our homes today. I see them less often these days but when I do I'm instantly transported back to homemade apple pies, jelly cakes, my Nanna's prized orchids and the most well kept lawn in all of Adelaide.
